Welcome to l'Odyssée des Bâtisseurs

Welcome to l'Odyssée des Bâtisseurs. In Lac-Saint-Jean, water is omnipresent. Discover how this resource powered the development of the region through the many activities offered by L'Odyssée des Bâtisseurs. Thanks to our indoor and outdoor activities, you will learn how water was a key factor in the growth of our region and its progression towards major industrial development. Our theme starts with the construction of the Isle- Maligne hydroelectric complex – a colossal construction site built between 1923 and 1926 – which transformed the region and its inhabitants. Discover the extraordinary efforts of our “empire-builders” as you visit our displays and participate in workshops, animated performances, and follow a pedestrian path adorned with old ruins and reconstructed vestiges.

Plan your visit

L'Odyssée des Bâtisseurs offers indoor and outdoor activities. All year long, see the exhibitions presented in a heritage building and discover our permanent exhibition Au-delà de l'eau (Water and beyond). Water and beyond is an historical exhibition revolving around water as a resource – its geography and distribution around the territory, power and energy potential, harnessing and processing into electricity, management and protection, consumption and use. Using water as a topical thread, the exhibition emphasizes the human and societal aspects, and the associated lifestyles. Water and beyond is the staging of territorial waters at the centre of regional history and modern challenges. Temporary exhibitions and workshops for the entire family are also offered. Guided tours according to availability and interpretation signs (bilingual).
From June to September, inside a former water tower, live a 360° experience, a gripping immersive movie that takes you through the immensity of our territory. Come experience it! See Alma City from the scenic lookout; its waterways and hydropower facilities sparked industrial development in the region. Stroll down the walking trails, adorned with vestiges and hebertism games for children, and where you will meet colourful characters!

The water castle

First used as a water reservoir from 1936-1980, the water tower has since been transformed and has quite a few surprises in store for you. The observatory, rising 15 meters in altitude, offers a magnificent view of the hydroelectric facilities which are at the root of the industrial growth in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. You can also view the Grande Décharge River, a jewel of our natural heritage, the city of Alma and the surrounding areas.
